iSCSI...About to Go Mainstream?
June 14, 2007

Who can predict which technologies of interest will mature and become widely adopted, and which will languish on the periphery for a short while before fading into obscurity?

Not so long ago, virtualization seemed to be one of those innovations that might make sense for limited deployment—say, in testing and development environments—but would never be robust enough for primetime.

Now we are seeing enterprises embrace iSCSI networking with the same enthusiasm. This move makes sense, since iSCSI offers a simple, cost-effective way to manage storage and disaster recovery. Our latest article explores the additional benefits iSCSI networks bring to virtualized environments, where managing storage could be awkward and risky.

As if to prove this point, Brocade Communications Systems, aka the “High Church of Fibre Systems”, just announced that it will release an iSCSI initiator. When a company like Brocade hops on the bandwagon, you know iSCSI isn’t just a passing fad.

In fact, a recent Peripheral Concepts study found that over the past year iSCSI implementation has more than doubled from 17 percent to 37 percent of those surveyed.

Why is iSCSI gaining so much traction? An ESG report earlier this year found that enterprises using iSCSI networks reduce SAN capital expenditures and deployment time, while increasing server connectivity and gaining easier management of storage resources.

With benefits like these, it’s no surprise iSCSI is going mainstream.

When we launched the Scale Out Advantage site about a year ago, our goal was to explore and discuss ways to make the data center more efficient. As our site's title expressed, our overarching philosophy was that flexible, adaptive industry-standard IT architecture offers the best path for enterprises to compete in today's constantly changing marketplace.
